What is You Won This Hole?

It is an image-macro template that pairs the Mario Golf: World Tour victory screen, where a character poses above the subtitle 'You won this hole,' with a top caption that turns the line into a sex joke.

Where did You Won This Hole come from?

Mario Golf: World Tour launched in Japan on May 1st, 2014, and the following month Tumblr user neatpotatoes posted Waluigi's victory screen with the caption 'when they say their dick is 8 inches'.

What does You Won This Hole mean?

The phrase is Nintendo's in-game congratulation for winning a golf hole, but online it is read as a sexual innuendo, with the top caption setting up a penis-size or body-count brag.

How do you use You Won This Hole?

People typically overwrite the top of the screen with a setup line about a brag or expectation, keep the 'You won this hole' subtitle intact, and sometimes swap Waluigi for Daisy, Peach or an unrelated character like the Gnome Child.

Is You Won This Hole still popular?

It is a classic Tumblr-era image macro that still gets reposted as a stock innuendo reply, though the biggest documented engagement, like apollollo's 184,000-note post, came between 2015 and 2018.

You Won This Hole is an image macro series pulled from the 2014 Nintendo 3DS game Mario Golf: World Tour, where victory screens show characters like Waluigi and Daisy posing above the subtitle 'you won this hole.' Tumblr users spotted the double entendre within weeks of the Japanese release, turning the screenshot into one of the most reposted sex-joke templates of the mid-2010s.

Overview

You Won This Hole takes the end-of-hole victory screens from Mario Golf: World Tour, in which characters smile, pump their fists or strike a pose while the game writes 'YOU WON THIS HOLE' across the top of the frame, and reads the subtitle as a sex joke. Waluigi's screen is the most reposted version because of his wide grin and open-armed stance, but Daisy, Peach and other roster members appear in later edits2.

The format works like a two-panel setup gone wrong. Captions on top set up a punchline about penis size, body count or a sexual boast, and the Mario Golf screen pays it off by congratulating the partner on winning 'this hole'1 3. The humor hinges on cheerful Nintendo mascots being dropped into contexts Nintendo would never sign off on, and the single phrase doing all the innuendo work.

Date

2014

Mario Golf: World Tour launched in Japan on May 1st, 2014, with victory animations that captioned each hole win with the line 'You won this hole'3. The screen was pure stock Nintendo copy; the meme is a fan reading of it.

The earliest documented edit came the following month on Tumblr, where user neatpotatoes posted Waluigi's victory screen with the caption 'when they say their dick is 8 inches,' a post that collected more than 96,000 notes over the next four years1. Nintendo developed the game and the animation; the double-entendre repost is where the meme itself begins.

How It Spread

The joke stayed on Tumblr through 2015, when user apollollo reposted a Waluigi version on January 11th with the caption 'send this your crush,' pushing the image past 184,000 notes within three years2. Reposts of that single screenshot kept the format alive on Tumblr dashboards even as the site's user base shrank.

Meme-template infrastructure caught up in 2017. On March 3rd, ShitpostBot 5000 user LUNATICTKR uploaded the Waluigi screen as a reusable source image, letting the bot generate randomized versions on demand4. That listing moved the format from hand-made Photoshop edits to automated remixing.

Reddit picked it up in early 2018. On January 19th, Instagram account @pubity posted a Daisy variation with the setup 'Her: How tall are you? Him: 6-,' which was then mirrored to r/MemeEconomy by VreachAndClearV2 for more than 19,000 points and 195 comments5 3. Days later, Redditor DontWeDoItInTheRoad posted a self-deprecating 'Me: I run a meme page / Her:' version on r/dankmemes that pulled in roughly 6,000 points6, and on April 6th, user IxaII swapped Waluigi for RuneScape's Gnome Child on the same subreddit1.

How to Use This Meme

The common convention is to pair a top caption that sets up a sexual brag or expectation with the unedited Mario Golf 'You won this hole' screen as the reply. Waluigi is the default character, but swapping in Daisy, Peach or an unrelated character like RuneScape's Gnome Child is a frequent variation3 5.
