Chads Dancing To California Gurls In Friday the 13th: The Game is a 2022 TikTok trend where players make the Chad Kensington character do the 'shake it' emote in a beachwear skin while Jason Voorhees stalks them, soundtracked by Katy Perry's 'California Gurls'. The gag spilled out of the slasher game within weeks, with live-action baseball bat videos and Team Fortress 2 and Deltarune edits following by July 2022.

Overview

Tonal collision between slasher horror and bubblegum pop drives the joke. Chad Kensington is the frat-boy camp counselor asset in Friday the 13th: The Game, and dressing him in the 'spring break 1984' outfit makes a machete-wielding Jason entering the cabin feel absurd against Katy Perry's chorus1. In the standard clip, Chad never breaks the 'shake it' emote loop, so the shot cuts between hip-shaking animation and Jason's slow approach on the beat.

A second canonical setup inverts the premise: two Chads flex the dance over a defeated Jason, flipping the slasher's usual power balance2. Live-action imitations use the same song and two-shot structure but replace Jason with a viewer POV, often knocked down by a baseball bat or hiding in a bathroom3. Crossover edits transplant the emote and audio onto characters from other games while using Jason's horror staging as the running reference8.

TikToker @relaxedwindowgaming posted the first video on May 26, 2022, filming the Chad character in the 'spring break 1984' costume looping the 'shake it' emote as Jason Voorhees walked into the cabin, with Katy Perry's 2010 single playing over the gameplay1. According to Know Your Meme's trend entry, that upload reached over 1.2 million views and 177,000 likes within roughly two months5.

A follow-up on June 11, 2022, placed two Chads doing the emote in front of a downed Jason, inverting the slasher setup and giving the format its most-copied template2. The sequel hit over 15.4 million views and 2.6 million likes within about a month of posting, which carried the gag into TikTok's wider For You feed.

How It Spread

Live-action imitations arrived within two weeks of the second TikTok. Variations stacked up through June and July. @mrfinnymore3 uploaded a two-scene video on June 13, 2022, cutting from a terrified bathroom cower to a confident dance, and reached 1.8 million views6. Two-person duets scored the biggest numbers: @loczniki's July 3, 2022 version with Locz and Niki hit 22.1 million views and 2.8 million likes in just over two weeks7.

How to Use This Meme

A standard clip uses the Chad Kensington character in Friday the 13th: The Game, dressed in the 'spring break 1984' outfit, performing the 'shake it' emote while Jason Voorhees appears in frame, with Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' as the audio1. Common conventions include letting the emote loop while Jason stalks closer, or stacking two Chads over Jason's body after he's downed2. Live-action takes typically replace Jason with a POV victim and sub in the person recording for the dancing Chad3.
