Dr. Hax is a Garry's Mod meme character who first appeared in DasBoSchitt's 'Gmod Idiot Box' video uploaded to YouTube on November 28, 20081. The bit stars an inflated-head version of Half-Life 2's Dr. Breen who screams 'HAAAX' while telekinetically flinging a CRT monitor at his target, with the shout later isolated as a standalone sound effect6.

Overview

Dr. Hax is a Garry's Mod character built on the Dr. Breen model from Half-Life 2, with the head inflated to cartoon proportions as his signature look3. In the source clip he yells 'HAAAX' and flings a computer monitor at his opponent through what reads on-screen like telekinesis. The scream itself was later isolated and passed around as a downloadable sound effect on clip-sharing sites6.

The gag works because it packs a full sight bit into a couple of seconds: the warped model, the strangled shout, and the airborne monitor. Other GMOD creators picked up the character and dropped him into their own machinima shorts, and community threads on Facepunch Forums tracked the growing volume of tributes2.

YouTuber DasBoSchitt uploaded the first 'Gmod Idiot Box' short on November 28, 2008, and Dr. Hax appeared inside it as one of several throwaway GMOD sketches1. The Dr. Hax bit stood out enough that viewers kept referencing it, and DasBoSchitt went on to make six 'Gmod Idiot Box' entries in total, with the Dr. Hax segment setting the template other GMOD animators started riffing on3.

How It Spread

From January through June 2009, roughly 16 Dr. Hax tribute videos were uploaded by other GMOD creators, and by July new fan clips were appearing on an almost-daily basis3.

That same month, a user named crazystile uploaded a downloadable HAX model to garrysmod.org so other players could import Dr. Hax directly into their scenes4. On August 23, 2009, General 62 Productions posted a Lego build of Dr. Hax to Flickr, an example of the character moving from the GMOD engine into physical fan projects5.

Not everyone in the scene was thrilled with the saturation. Regulars on the Facepunch Forums, the community hub tied to Garry's Mod, publicly complained that Dr. Hax tributes had gotten repetitive, and some threads accused tribute makers of plagiarism2. A separate Urban Dictionary entry for the character was later added by a user going by V. Shadows7.

How to Use This Meme

Machinima makers typically pull the Dr. Breen model in Garry's Mod, inflate the head to Dr. Hax proportions, cue the HAAAX scream, and animate him hurling a computer monitor at another character in the scene4.
