The name refers to Gilardi himself, so people typically use it when talking about his animations such as APPLE.MOV or Fazbear & Friends rather than as a meme template.

HotDiggedyDemon is the online alias of American web animator Max Gilardi, who built a following on Newgrounds and YouTube starting in 2003 with shorts full of dark humor and pop culture parody3. His breakout came with the 2011 series PONY.MOV, a foul-mouthed take on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic whose first episode passed ten million YouTube views1.

Overview

HotDiggedyDemon's animations sit in the tradition of Newgrounds-era Flash comedy, mixing crude drawings, rapid cuts, and shock jokes aimed at mainstream cartoons and video games1. Gilardi's output covers the Jerry shorts, the game-criticism satire Wacky Game Jokez 4 Kidz built around a bitter host called Mickey the Dick, and one-off parodies such as Luigi's Day Out and the Five Nights at Freddy's send-up Fazbear & Friends4 7.

PONY.MOV is his best-known project under the HotDiggedyDemon name, and its blend of Friendship is Magic character designs with vulgar sketch comedy set the template fans still tie to the handle5.

Max Gilardi registered on Newgrounds in 2003 under the handle HotDiggedyDemon and began posting Flash shorts the same year3. His first upload, The Story of Skunk Head, went live in November 2003 and picked up a Daily 4th Place award the day after it landed; a follow-up called Adam Android Strikes Back arrived in December and took Daily Feature, pushing him toward the abrasive comedic voice that shaped his later work5.

How It Spread

In 2007 Gilardi launched Jerry on Newgrounds, where the short won Daily Feature and User's Weekly Choice; the 2009 YouTube re-upload pulled in more than 1.8 million views2. He set up an official Twitter account that same year, then rolled out Wacky Game Jokez 4 Kidz in 2010, using the cynical Mickey the Dick character to send up gaming comedy conventions4.

The turning point came in October 2011 with APPLE.MOV, the first PONY.MOV episode, which climbed past ten million YouTube views1. Third entry SHED.MOV edged past the first in view count, and the series inspired a Tumblr ask blog for its version of Applejack alongside a Twitter feed for Paco, the Mexican laborer character introduced as Rarity's employee5.

Gilardi kept branching into new franchises. In 2014 he uploaded Luigi's Day Out, an alternate-timeline take on Super Mario that became one of his most-viewed non-pony shorts6. In 2015 the Five Nights at Freddy's parody Fazbear & Friends passed 3.7 million views on YouTube7. That May he also drew heat for a Steven Jewniverse image posted to his personal site, which pulled sharp reactions from Steven Universe fans on Tumblr and mixed responses on 4chan's /co/ board5.
