It's Like Finding a Gold Scar is a 2024 image macro and video format that compares lucky real-life moments to looting the rare Gold Scar assault rifle in Fortnite. Starting with a September 2024 Instagram carousel from @sportsculture, the joke moved onto TikTok through October paired with Jon Bellion's 'All Time Low,' and by late November 2024 the main TikTok sound tracked close to 30,000 posts.

Overview

Each post sets a 'How it feels...' caption over a Fortnite screenshot of a player collecting a Gold Scar, treating the game's rare drop as a stand-in for a blessed moment in real life1. The soundtrack of choice is Jon Bellion's 'All Time Low,' timed so the opening lyric 'I was the knight in shining armor in your movie' lands as the gun appears on screen2.

Captions range from mild sports takes to niche jokes about Geek Bar vapes, clueless substitute teachers, and finding a friend with matching humor5. Later versions moved past the image macro approach: creators acted out the lucky scenario or sang the Bellion track while pretending to loot the weapon in-game6. Instagram pages mirrored the trend by reposting the strongest TikTok edits for crossover audiences8.

The format first appeared on September 28, 2024, when Instagram account @sportsculture published a carousel of six image macros built on a Fortnite screencap of a player finding a Gold Scar1. The opening slide read 'How it feels watching your NFL team win on Sundays,' and the post picked up roughly 31,700 likes over the next two months4. @sportsculture made the image macros but did not pair them with the Jon Bellion song that later defined the trend, so the full audio-plus-image package came together only after TikTok users picked up the joke.

How It Spread

On October 1, 2024, TikTok user @mrwalkyoudownwiththe223 added Jon Bellion's 'All Time Low' to a Gold Scar photo captioned 'How it feels to hit your Geek Bar while drinking a half and half Twisted Tea'2. That post reached 796,100 plays within a month and locked in the audio pairing for the rest of the trend4. Ten days later, @jackc_24 switched to a different TikTok upload of the same Bellion song for a caption about walking past a homeless person's cup of coins, and the second sound was the one most creators used going forward3.

By early November, the format reached a wider TikTok audience. @crzxywrld posted 'How it felt going into English class and seeing a clueless sub' on November 9, 2024, attracting 4.9 million plays and 1.1 million likes within twelve days5. The same day, @adrielisshort flipped the format into a video skit about finding a friend who matches your skill, humor, and vibe7, and @cumward's Instagram repost of a TikTok version added roughly 41,000 more likes8.

On November 17, @sniff_maxwell posted a video of himself badly singing Bellion's 'All Time Low' while a Gold Scar appeared on screen, and the clip reached 6.8 million plays and 1.4 million likes in four days6. Four days after that, the main TikTok sound tracked around 29,700 posts and the format was still being iterated on by new creators9.
