Overview

The joke treats Matt like a video game boss who broke free from the CPU roster. Posts on Reddit exaggerate his abilities to absurd heights, portraying him as an unkillable menace who trained his whole life to embarrass the player2. Formats include image macros pairing his flat Mii portrait with grandiose captions, screenshots of his tournament matches, and edits placing him next to characters like Shaggy or Thanos3.

Part of what fuels the joke is how ordinary Matt looks. His plain sweater, brown hair, and mustache clash with the elite status he holds inside the game's tournament brackets5. The mundane appearance paired with top-tier CPU rating carries most of the humor.

Creators often crop his headshot from Wii Sports menus and stack it beside pop culture heavyweights, framing him as the one character who could take them out2. The setup works best when it treats Matt with total seriousness while the punchline sells his god-tier skill.
