Normal Pills refers to a scene in Minecraft YouTuber Dream's "Mask" music video, where an animated version of him swallows medication from a bottle labeled "normal pills" before tossing it in the trash. Within a day of the video's June 2021 release, Twitter and Instagram users were ripping the clip apart in image macros, with one viral tweet pointing out the bottle looked more like antibiotics than an SSRI.

Overview

In the clip, animated teenage Dream struggles with ADHD at school, opens a bottle labeled "normal pills" around the 1:40 mark, and tosses the pills after deciding he doesn't need them1. The Normal Pills meme format centers on either the bottle itself or the character holding it, with captions imagining a doctor literally prescribing something called "normal pills."

Reaction templates picked up the joke quickly. A sad SpongeBob SquarePants edit added top-text about a prescription for normal pills6, and other posts transplanted the bottle onto sad cats or cartoon villains9. The humor leans on how clumsy the metaphor sounds when read back literally, though some posters also used the scene to accuse Dream of talking kids out of their ADHD medication5.

Dream, a Minecraft YouTuber and musician, released the single "Mask" on May 21, 20212, then uploaded the Pixar-style animated music video on his Dream Music channel on June 8, hitting 3.6 million views in two days1. The clip animates a teenage Dream being outcast at school and finding comfort in his signature white smiley-face mask, with the "normal pills" bottle appearing around the 1:40 mark as the medication he eventually throws away.

That same day, Instagram user @grandmas.butt clipped the pill scene with the deadpan caption "normal pills," reaching 351,000 views and 63,000 likes in two days3. Commenters mostly dunked on how overwrought the imagery felt, setting the tone for the formats that followed.

How It Spread

Normal Pills memes appeared on Twitter and Instagram on June 9, 2021, the day after the video's release. User @ASTR4N0MICALL posted a close-up of the bottle noting that the label read like antibiotics, "'TAKE THREE TIMES DAILY FOR 10 DAYS UNTIL ALL TAKEN' HOMEBOY YOU HAD AN INFECTION NOT DEPRESSION," collecting 11,600 likes and 1,800 retweets in a day4. Instagram user @alter.peego's SpongeBob edit was reposted by @grandmas.butt the same day and hit 53,900 likes7.

Other versions leaned absurd. @mydearvampire's cat photo captioned "They made him take normal pills when he was 6" picked up 11,900 likes and 1,600 retweets8, while @pedros_friend replaced Dream with the Antichrist from the webcomic "I Hate the Antichrist"9. Criticism of the song's message grew after Dream told ex-Smosh co-host Anthony Padilla in an interview that he had discarded his own prescribed medication, a stance some called irresponsible toward kids on similar prescriptions10.

How to Use This Meme

A typical Normal Pills post crops the bottle from the music video, then adds a caption imagining the pills as a real prescription given to a sad character. Common conventions include replacing Dream with another "sad guy" figure like SpongeBob or a cat, with top-text written as if a doctor is handing over the bottle.
