Pikachu Boner is an NSFW image macro that edits a screenshot of a sleeping Pikachu from a 1998 Pokémon episode so the blanket looks like it's tenting over an erection, usually paired with edgy captions3. The unedited still first spread as an innocent reaction image on Tumblr in 2015, then got its adult-humor photoshop treatment in 2016 and settled in as an edgy anime image macro that circulated for years on Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit.

Overview

The Pikachu Boner image is a lightly edited frame from the Pokémon anime in which a bump in Pikachu's blanket has been reshaped to imply an erection3. Posts stack the doctored still with edgy, taboo, or dark-humor captions and play the wide-eyed expression like a punchline about Pikachu being caught mid-thought.

Two forms circulate side by side. The unedited screenshot works as a straight reaction image, sometimes captioned in Spanish to convey a 'saw something I shouldn't' beat. The photoshopped erection version is the properly NSFW form the meme is named after, and is the one that powers the darker jokes traded on Twitter and Reddit's r/MemeEconomy3.

The base image comes from season 1, episode 4 of the Pokémon anime, 'Challenge of the Samurai,' which first aired in the United States on September 11, 19981. It was the fourth entry in the show's original Indigo League run of Ash and Pikachu adventures2. In the scene, Ash tries to wake Pikachu so they can move on, and Pikachu rolls over under a blanket and ignores him. The shape of the blanket over Pikachu's midsection is what the meme fixates on.

The still itself started circulating online around 2015 as an innocuous reaction image, and the 'boner' edit that gave the meme its name arrived in 20163. Nobody has been confirmed as the person who first photoshopped in the erection, so the format's creator is treated as unknown; Twitter user @ohtrevdawg is usually cited as the earliest known poster of an erection edit rather than its author.

How It Spread

The unedited screenshot spread first. In 2015 it circulated as a plain reaction image on Tumblr, with a Spanish-language edit picking up more than 2,500 notes that year. Momentum jumped on April 2, 2016, when Tumblr user uglyrad posted the still with the caption 'pikachu knew what was up' and pulled in over 286,000 notes, taking the joke mainstream on the platform3. Around the same time, an Imgur upload of a related tweet by @AkatsukiClouds on March 20, 2016 added another wave of reposts.

The properly NSFW photoshop arrived weeks later. Twitter user @ohtrevdawg posted one of the earliest known edits giving Pikachu an actual erection on April 30, 20163. Nearly a year later, on March 9, 2017, the erection edit was posted to r/MemeEconomy with an edgy caption and earned more than 390 upvotes, treated as a bullish 'invest' joke in that subreddit's mock-market format. From 2017 onward, the edgy-caption template became the default form the meme took across Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit.

How to Use This Meme

A typical Pikachu Boner post pairs the doctored image with a short, deliberately transgressive caption written from Pikachu's point of view, often something taboo or uncomfortable3. Common conventions include first-person 'thinking about it' captions and reply-image use in threads, where the joke lands as a reaction to something the poster wants to admit but pretend to be caught with. The unedited screenshot is still used as a milder reaction image when the NSFW punchline would push too far.
