Pitbulls vs. Toddlers, also known as Pit Bulls Attacking Toddlers, is a long-running meme format portraying pit bulls as uniquely dangerous dogs that attack small children. Sparked by the 2018 #PitBullDropOff Twitter hoax and nurtured on 4chan and iFunny, the format hit TikTok in 2022 and spawned AI-made images on 4chan threads by late 2023.

Overview

Posts in the format fall into two camps. Captioned image macros and iFunny-style one-liners cite dog-bite statistics or imagine absurd pit bull violence against toddlers, while the 2022 TikTok edits leaned on comedic voiceovers and lip-sync bits riffing on the same claims4. The dark humor runs on exaggeration: a toddler is startled, a pit bull is drawn as an unhinged killer, often with text that treats the attack as inevitable6.

By late 2023 the format shifted toward AI generation, with 4chan threads producing Bing Image Creator pictures of oversized demonic pit bulls looming over children or appearing as soulslike bosses7. Subreddits such as /r/BanPitBulls collect these jokes and recycle them inside the community's anti-pit bull discussions2.

Date

The format grew out of the #PitBullDropOff hashtag campaign in May 2018, a Twitter hoax where users posed as owners taking their pit bulls to kill shelters. On 4chan, discussion of the hoax turned into a stream of anti-pit bull image macros portraying the breed as a toddler-killing menace3. On December 20th, 2018, iFunny user TurdFurgisonXXL_2016 posted one of the earliest surviving examples, joking about a pit bull setting a 'world child-eating record'6. Dedicated subreddits predated the TikTok viral moment: /r/pitbullhate opened in 2016 and /r/BanPitBulls in 2017, with members archiving memes sourced from /pol/2.

How It Spread

TikTok amplified the format in early 2022. On January 25th, @motesticle posted a pit bull vs. toddler bit that drew more than 900,000 plays and 140,000 likes within ten months4. Days later on January 30th, @d.ortga's version added 250,000 plays and 37,000 likes over the same window9.

Momentum carried into summer. On July 4th, 2022, @d.park3r69 posted a video that reached more than 500,000 plays in three months5. iFunny stayed active in parallel; on October 21st, user Poonerino shared a layered joke about a pit bull, a drunk driver, and other threats to children that drew over 1,000 smiles in three days8.

A new wing opened on September 30th, 2023, when an anonymous poster started a Pitbulls vs. Toddlers thread on 4chan's /an/ board with a Bing Image Creator picture of a demonic pit bull7. On October 2nd, 2023, X user @tulpapilled posted an AI image of a pit bull using a baby vending machine that drew more than 5,400 likes in a day1.
