Ricardo Milos is a Brazilian adult model whose erotic solo dance in a red bandana and American flag thong became a running gag on Japan's Nico Nico Douga in 2011, then got a second life in 2018 when Russian imageboard users weaponized the clip as a bait-and-switch against TikTok dance posts.

Overview

The core clip is roughly a minute of Ricardo Milos in a red bandana and American flag thong, hip-shaking and grinning at the camera against a plain backdrop. Japanese remixers on Nico Nico Douga treated the footage as raw material for MAD videos, syncing his moves to Smile.dk's Dance Dance Revolution track "Butterfly (Upswing Mix)" and swapping his body for hand-drawn Touhou characters or MikuMikuDance rigs1. The resulting subgenre got its own tag, 蝶のように舞いーニョ, and folded Milos into the wider Gachimuchi wrestling-video canon2.

Outside Japan the meme mutated into a pure bait-and-switch. Editors trimmed the dance to fit vertical TikTok proportions, kept the Butterfly loop, and used the clip as a jump-scare to derail whatever the viewer expected to see, most often a young female TikTok dancer1. The joke lives on the sudden contrast between an overproduced short-form dance and a middle-aged Brazilian stripper suddenly filling the frame3.

Date
2010

Milos' source footage first circulated on the gay porn site Jock Butt in the 2000s. On October 15th, 2010, a user reposted the clip to Nico Nico Douga inside the Gachimuchi series, where it collected more than 500,000 plays and earned Milos the pun nickname Ro nau jii nyo (ロナウ自慰ニョ), riffing on Ronaldinho with the kanji for masturbation2.

The MAD fad proper started on July 14th, 2011, when an NND user uploaded 蝶のように舞いーニョ, a hand-drawn animation of the Touhou character Yuyuko Saigyouji reproducing Milos' choreography over Smile.dk's "Butterfly (Upswing Mix)". The clip topped NND's daily ranking and pulled in over 850,000 views, triggering hundreds of follow-up MADs from other creators2.

How It Spread

Through late 2011 and into 2012, NND users rolled out variants swapping in wrestlers, horses, crows, tennis coach Shuzo Matsuoka, and Cookie☆ cast members, and by December 2018 more than 390 entries were filed under the 舞いーニョシリーズ tag2. A YouTube mirror uploaded by GACHIMUCHI GAY in August 2016 pushed the raw dance out of NND's paywalled ecosystem and past 100,000 views, giving non-Japanese audiences their first easy look at the source clip4.

The Russian-speaking web adopted Milos in mid-2018. The VKontakte community Танцы Рикардо Милоса posted a compilation on June 18th that cleared 50,000 views, and on August 31st YouTuber yarix paired the dance with Howard the Alien for another 100,000-plus2. That same spring a São Paulo bodybuilder named Nilton Felix launched the Twitch channel Ricardo Milos do LOL on March 3rd, 2018, streaming League of Legends in Milos' red bandana and convincing a chunk of viewers he was the man himself (translated from Russian)1.

The bait-and-switch format crystallized on 2ch.hk's /b/ board. A dance thread opened on September 30th, 2018, turned into a flame war between Milos posters and fans of TikTok dancers such as cosplayer Bonbibonkers, and /b/ users began splicing the Butterfly clip into TikTok-shaped edits to bait clicks from the opposing camp2. Reaction compilations built on that template piled up on YouTube over the following months53.
