Sir Get Down! is a sound clip ripped from 2016 Ohio bodycam footage of Officer Joshua Hilling repeatedly yelling the phrase at a knife-wielding suspect. The audio went viral on TikTok in spring 2022 once creators dubbed it over a video of a different cop breakdancing in grass, kicking off a 'Me When X Becomes Illegal' format that pulled tens of millions of plays.

Overview

The joke rides on the mismatch between Hilling's frantic, repeated shouting and whatever silly footage sits under it. The earliest known edits paired the audio with Turk from Scrubs doing a Fortnite dance and with gameplay from SWAT 35. The template locked in once creators synced the shouting to a 2016 Facebook clip of an officer breakdancing on grass, originally posted by Britton Winfree, which already had around 2.3 million views on its own2.

Once the breakdancing version hit TikTok in April 2022, creators started pairing it with text overlays reading 'me when X becomes illegal,' where X is some harmless or endearing habit the poster is doing6. The gag plays on fake panic, framing everyday behavior as a felony that would make Hilling draw his gun.

The source audio comes from bodycam footage recorded on March 29, 2016, when Ohio officer Joshua Hilling stopped a man walking illegally along a highway and recognized him as a homicide suspect1. During the stop, the suspect drew a knife to try to goad Hilling into shooting, and CNN later uploaded the full bodycam video to YouTube on April 6, 2016 as evidence of Hilling's restraint during the suspect's trial5. Around the 52-second mark, Hilling starts yelling 'Sir, get down!' in rapid repetition, the exact chunk of audio later lifted for meme use1.

How It Spread

The audio stayed in low-circulation YouTube reposts through late 2020 and 2021 before breaking out on TikTok in spring 20225. On April 16, 2022, TikToker @goshybob posted the breakdancing cop edit, pulling about 2.4 million plays and 471,100 likes over three months3.

Five days later, @sheeshsoggymilk reposted the same clip to roughly 3.2 million plays, and that upload's audio became the sound other creators pulled from going forward4. On June 13, 2022, @bradeazy ran the format with the text overlay 'me the day becoming hella chill becomes illegal,' hitting around 7.5 million plays and 1 million likes in a month, which codified the 'Me When X Becomes Illegal' template6. A week later, @mynglovesd12 ran the same joke with 'me if only talking to guys w mustaches was illegal,' pulling about 2 million plays and 341,900 likes7.

How to Use This Meme

Creators typically overlay the breakdancing cop clip with the shouting audio and add a 'me when X becomes illegal' text line, where X is a mundane or endearing habit, like being too chill or only wanting to talk to men with mustaches. The repeating 'Sir, get down!' audio does the comic work.
