Overview

Umi Walking With A Candle is a reaction GIF pulled from Rental, an indie horror game where players control a small bunny named Umi. In the clip, Umi shuffles down a dark hallway holding a single candle, looking hesitant and on edge 1. The GIF spread across X and Tumblr through 2024 and 2025 as a shorthand for feeling nervous or dreadful in a mundane situation 2.

Part of the appeal early on was that plenty of viewers assumed the anxious bunny came from Animal Crossing rather than a horror game, which added a layer of cozy irony to the tense visual 4. By late 2025, use of the GIF split into two camps: earnest captions describing genuinely awkward moments, and parody captions mocking how minor those moments really were 8.

How It Spread

Adoption stayed steady through 2024. On March 12, @jackcashew paired the GIF with "How it feels to retake with 4 people spectating you," pulling roughly 6,900 likes 9. Late in November the format jumped to Tumblr when user witchblade captioned it "im on that good kush an acahol," a deliberate misspelling of a Future lyric from Lil Wayne's "Love Me" 4. On November 28, 2024, Tumblr user pls-send-me-help-21 reblogged the post with the misspelled quote burned onto the GIF as top and bottom text, gaining over 29,100 notes 6.

The format hit its biggest early peak on December 27, 2024, when @pyrarity used it for a POV tweet about joining a Discord server "where everyone is interacting and having fun," clearing 188,000 likes 3. Momentum carried into 2025, with @INDIEWASHERE tweeting the GIF on January 4 captioned "Going from app to app trying to avoid AI," which pulled around 259,000 likes over 11 months 5.

By November 2025, a wave of ironic posts started parodying the earnest captions by pairing the anxious bunny with situations most people would consider trivial or deliberately edgy. On November 17, @ouiouiapey posted "Heard a language that wasn't English at Target," picking up over 16,000 likes 8. A week later on November 24, @iamyomas quote-tweeted a "what's the lore behind your birth" prompt with the GIF captioned "So like… my parents um… did the… S word….", which cleared over 274,000 likes in 11 days 7.
