On January 15, 2021, TikToker @louim69 filmed a woman screaming 'Who are you laughing at?' at his car, and the audio moved through TikTok as a dance sound set to a Duke & Jones remix. By early February 2021, a lip-dub from TikToker @tia_hendy was nicknamed Thwomp Girl after Stitch edits compared her head shape to the stone block enemy from Super Mario Bros.

Overview

Who Are You Laughing At, also known as the Thwomp Girl or IRL Thwomp meme, covers two overlapping TikTok strands tied to the same shouted clip. One strand is a dance set to a Duke & Jones remix of the audio, with choreography popularized by TikToker @imcal in early February 20213. The other is Stitch edits of TikToker Tia Hendy's lip-dub cut against a Thwomp sprite from Super Mario Bros., playing on the resemblance between her face and the stone block enemy4.

A typical Thwomp Girl post is a short side-by-side or quick cut from Tia's lip-dub to a Thwomp texture, sometimes dressed up in the Friday Night Funkin' sprite-swap style memer doggityy used2. Dance edits skip the comparison entirely and use the shouting as a drop cue, where creators mouth the opening lines before launching into @imcal's choreography.

How It Spread

In early February 2021, UK bass duo Duke & Jones released a remix of the audio on Instagram, though the original has since been removed3. TikToker @imcal followed on February 5, 2021, with a dance tutorial that climbed past 4 million views in six months. Over 4,700 TikToks used the sound in the same stretch.

Thwomp Girl debuted on February 8, 2021, when @tia_hendy posted a lip-dub to the sound and later removed it. Stitches arrived the same day, including @m0rr155's edit splicing Tia with a Thwomp sprite from Super Mario Bros. YouTuber Spark's meme collection reposted that Stitch on April 16, 2021, under the title 'Girl looks like Thwomp from Mario,' passing a million views in four months4. Memer doggityy folded the clip into a Friday Night Funkin' edit on March 13, 2021, with the YouTube version reaching 188,000 views in five months2.
