'Can't Even Play Minecraft In Ohio' names a catchphrase slapped on cursed Minecraft clips and modded edits sold as the Ohio version of the game, often paired with Cowbell Cult's 'Smoke.' The format took off on TikTok in August 2022 after @dorianlucas7 reuploaded a surreal bed-growing clip captioned 'POV: most normal day in Ohio.' By November 2022, YouTubers including Grandayy were posting their own Ohio-Minecraft versions to audiences in the hundreds of thousands.

Overview

A typical post shows a Minecraft player doing something broken or physics-defying: climbing into a bed that swallows them whole, morphing to giant size, or fighting a visually mangled Ender Dragon, with the Ohio claim added as caption or title3. Cowbell Cult's track 'Smoke' sits under many reuploads as an audio tag that tips viewers to the format1.

Most raw footage comes from YouTuber Not Safe, who makes modded and edited Minecraft clips that other creators repost labeled as Ohio Minecraft2. These edits live inside the longer 'Ohio vs. the World' running joke, which treats the state as a surreal zone where everyday rules break down. Humor relies on a deadpan Ohio label slapped over footage that would already read as cursed without it.

On August 15, 2022, TikToker @thanh.ms.ytb posted the source clip, showing a Minecraft player climbing into a huge bed, growing to enormous size, and then triggering more impossible in-game events; the video reached 11.5 million views within three months9. Later that day, TikToker @dorianlucas7 reuploaded the video with the caption 'POV: most normal day in Ohio,' which collected over 18,000 views across the same window10. The @dorianlucas7 reupload coined the Ohio framing that later uploads reused as a catchphrase.

How It Spread

Through fall 2022, the format moved onto YouTube, where creators ripped clips from Not Safe's modded Minecraft channel and packaged them under Ohio titles. On October 3, 2022, YouTuber Alexa Real uploaded 'can't even play minecraft in ohio 💀' featuring a mangled Ender Dragon battle, hitting over 176,000 views within a month1. On November 8, max_lucky reuploaded a Not Safe clip with added music as 'when you try to speedrun minecraft in ohio,' which reached more than 105,000 views in two weeks11.

Mid-November brought the biggest uploads. AL Medina's November 12 edit, which borrowed the Cowbell Cult audio from a Not Safe clip, hit over 344,000 views in a fortnight4. On November 16, meme YouTuber Grandayy posted an entry noting 'this was all done using resource pack magic,' which reached 111,000 YouTube views in five days5. Grandayy also tweeted the clip, where it hit over 62,000 views in the same window6.

By November 19, TikToker @hamer.x's version topped 3.3 million views in two days7. Kracc Bacc's YouTube upload that same day collected around 333,000 views in the same span8. After the November 2022 peak, named uploads using the exact title tapered off as the Ohio-as-cursed-zone joke broadened into other game and meme formats.

How to Use This Meme

Creators typically take a glitchy, modded, or resource-pack-altered Minecraft clip, often one originally by YouTuber Not Safe, and post it with a title or caption claiming it is Minecraft in Ohio2. A common convention is to overlay Cowbell Cult's 'Smoke' as background audio, often with the skull emoji attached to the title1.
