Overview

Lovander is a tall, pink, bipedal lizard Pal with heart-shaped fur on its chest, catalogued as entry 69 in Palworld's in-game Paldex1. Its description states that it chases others seeking a night of love, originally targeting other Pals before shifting its attention to humans in recent years2. The number placement and the Paldex wording became the two engines of the joke, with players treating the entry itself as evidence that Pocketpair knew exactly what it was doing.

Most posts about Lovander fall into a few shapes: screenshots of the Paldex page with a shocked caption, side-by-side comparisons to other suggestive game monsters like Pokemon's Salazzle3, and fan art ranging from innocent costume pieces to explicit rule 34 drawings4. Players also joke about Lovander's in-game work utility, since the Pal functions as a strong laborer at the player's base despite its unsettling flavor text5.

Pocketpair's Palworld launched into early access on Steam and Xbox on January 19, 2024, and shipped with a bestiary of over 100 Pals. Lovander appears as entry 69 in the Paldex, a numbering that fans quickly flagged as deliberate given the Pal's flavor text about chasing humans for debauchery2.

Lovander was first shown publicly on the Pocketpair YouTube channel in a Paldeck showcase video posted on December 29, 2023, where it carried entry number 49 before being renumbered to 69 at full release1. The December reveal passed without major attention until the game went live, after which Redditor u/HalfwittedRotmg posted a screenshot of the Paldex page to r/Palworld on January 16, 2024, asking what the developers meant by it2.

How It Spread

Lovander jokes picked up on launch week as players browsed the Paldex. The Reddit screenshot from u/HalfwittedRotmg drew more than 700 upvotes in a week on r/Palworld2. On January 19, 2024, X user @jifferey posted an image of Lovander with a caption summarizing the Paldex description about the Pal moving from mating with other Pals to targeting humans, and the post drew more than 27,000 likes in six days6.

The following day, @jifferey posted a follow-up calling Lovander a pink lizard menace that was also one of their best base workers, which a crossposter took to r/196 for roughly 3,100 upvotes and the original tweet reached about 12,000 likes7. On January 21, X user @DoeChops ran a flirting versus harassment comparison between Lovander and Salazzle from Pokemon, hitting around 11,000 likes in four days3. A similar comparison went up on r/lostpause the same day for about 900 upvotes.

Fan art followed fast. On January 22, X user @CarrotRipley posted a drawing of Lovander in a maid costume that collected roughly 3,000 likes in three days4, and lewd rule 34 pieces spread alongside it on art-sharing sites5. X user @LookAtMyMeat1 contributed another Lovander joke the same day that drew over 5,000 likes8.
