The format peaked with the January 2022 TikTok trend set to 'American Boy' and 'Chanel,' where the sound reached over 500,000 uses within weeks. Usage declined after that peak, though the drawing still appears within the broader ship dynamics genre.

Person On Leash, also known as Ship Dynamics Leash Meme or Person Holding Leash, is a minimal line drawing where one unenthused figure holds a grinning companion back by a short leash. First documented in a tweet by @ny0ungs on December 15, 20201, the drawing grew through 2021 as fandom editors slotted characters from anime, Marvel, and Star Wars into the two roles2. By January 2022, Spanish and English TikTokers had set the format to a sped-up mashup of 'American Boy' and 'Chanel,' driving the audio past 500,000 uses within weeks3.

Overview

Person On Leash edits label the two figures as a dynamic duo where one restrains the other. Common conventions include villain and henchman4, calm girlfriend and hyper boyfriend10, and canon ships from anime franchises like My Hero Academia2. Humor comes from the holder's blank, deadpan expression against the leashed character's wide, open-mouthed grin, suggesting the second figure would wreak havoc if the restraint ever snapped.

Posters keep the original line art intact and overlay text labels, changing the context without redrawing the figures. The template works as an extension of the ship dynamics meme, which charts the push and pull between fictional characters placed together in fan communities3. Later TikTok treatments drop written labels, instead cutting from the drawing to real-life friends who match each side of the dynamic.
